A2L Refrigerant System Service & Installation
New heating, cooling and VRF equipment uses a new class of refrigerants. Hobbs Mechanical’s technicians are trained to install and service A2L systems safely.
What Are A2L Refrigerants?
For years, most air conditioners and heat pumps used a refrigerant called R-410A. Under EPA rules that phase down high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants, new equipment is moving to lower-GWP alternatives such as R-454B and R-32.
These newer refrigerants are classified “A2L.” The “A” means they are low toxicity, the same as R-410A. The “2L” means they are mildly flammable. They are very difficult to ignite, but they require updated equipment design, tools and installation practices.
What This Means for You
Your Current System Is Fine
The rules apply to newly manufactured equipment. Existing R-410A systems can still be serviced and repaired.
New Equipment Is Changing
When it’s time to replace a system or install a new one, it will likely use an A2L refrigerant.
Training Matters
A2L systems call for specific handling, leak detection and installation procedures. Our technicians are trained on A2L systems.

A2L Questions
Do I have to replace my R-410A system?
No. The EPA rules apply to new equipment, not existing systems. Your current system can keep running and be serviced.
Are A2L refrigerants safe?
Yes, when equipment is designed for them and installed correctly. A2L refrigerants are low toxicity and only mildly flammable, and A2L equipment includes safety features such as leak detection. That’s why proper training matters.
Can R-410A equipment be switched to an A2L refrigerant?
Generally, no. A2L refrigerants require equipment designed for them, so they shouldn’t be added to a system built for R-410A.
Do you offer financing on new systems?
Yes. Financing is available through Service Finance Company, LLC. See financing options.
